Everest High Pass Trekking is an adventure that takes you from one scenic area to another beautiful Khumbu valley. Covering almost all the region of Khumbu and Everest areas, in the close shadow of towering snow peaks. The walks lead to breathtaking dramatic views of landscapes with snow-capped peaks throughout the trip. 

An adventure of a lifetime experience crossing over 5,000 meters of high ridges, facing mind-blowing scenery on Everest's three passes. Everest High Pass Trekking, popularly known as Everest Three Passes Trek, walks leads from east to west around the Khumbu region. 

A great opportunity to explore all the best areas of Everest within a total duration of 17 nights and 18 days. From the starting and ending point at Lukla, the gateway town for various adventures around high Khumbu valley.  

Everest High Passes Trek begins with moderate walks following the main busy trail through several lovely villages. Where every Sherpa’s settlement are lined with religious monument and prayer walls, making the trek more exciting and interesting.

After a few days' walks enter the Sagarmatha National Park, listed in World Heritage Sites since 1979. The park treasures exotic flora and fauna with the world’s famous peaks namely Mt. Everest, 

 Lhotse and Cho-Oyu. Includes Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Pumori, Tharmasarku, and Kwangde with Kantega, as well countless lesser peaks. Which makes the Khumbu and Everest region one of the most sought Himalayan destinations for various adventures. 
Of all the Everest three passes trek, Everest Cho-La pass is quite popular due to its prime location. Situated between beautiful Gokyo lakes and Everest base camp, Kongma-la and Renjo-La are seldom ventured due to their remoteness.

The Everest High Pass Trekking, from Lukla and entering Sagarmatha National Park continues heading uphill to the famous Namche Bazaar. Spending an extra day at Namche for acclimatization walk then leads to scenic Tengboche, a beautiful spot with a majestic monastery.

Tengboche is located amidst lovely woodland-facing views of Mt. Everest and the series of peaks that surrounds this scenic place. From Tengboche on the high trail to Imjatse valley where Dingboche and Chukung settlements are located. A picturesque Imjatse valley surrounded by towering peaks of Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam facing grand views of Island Peak.

From Chukung our real adventure starts towards Everest Three Passes, after having two overnights in Dingboche for proper acclimatization. The first and the highest pass to cross Kongma-La 5,540 m/ 18, 175 feet, stands between Nuptse and Pokalde Peaks

A tough climb to the top and then a long descent to cross over Khumbu glacier, then reaching Lobuche. After an overnight at Lobuche on the trail to the world’s highest Mt. Everest base camp, standing beneath towering peaks. Enjoy the arctic landscapes of ice and glaciers and then climb Kalapathar hill, the highest spot of the adventure. Spending an overnight at Gorakshep and completing the first phase of highlights, the adventure continues to cross Everest Cho-La Pass.

On crossing the high Cho-La Pass at 5, 420 m /17, 782 feet descend towards Gokyo valley. A beautiful country with emerald-colored lakes facing grand views of the world's 6th highest Mt. Cho-Oyu. At Gokyo climb on top Gokyo-Ri 5, 463 m / 17, 923 feet high, rewards superb panorama of the snow-mountain range. Includes views of the world's four highest peaks Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho-Oyu with Nepal’s longest Ngozumpa glaciers.

After a wonderful time around picturesque Gokyo valley and its simmering lakes, the adventure continues to cross the last Renjo-La pass.  A steep haul to the top with a grand vista of giant peaks that surrounds the Renjo-La Pass. Stand on top at 5, 345 m /17, 536 feet, feeling in great spirits, on completing all the major highlights. A long descent leads to a sleepy village at Thame and its old impressive monastery, the west end of Khumbu valley.

Finally completing all Everest High Three Passes crossing, an easy walk downhill to Lukla for the last overnight halt around Khumbu. The next morning a scenic flight brings you to Kathmandu, after a memorable experience and adventure on Everest High Pass Trekking.

Everest High Pass Trekking Difficulties:

Everest High Pass Trekking is not that difficult as one can imagine. The only tough and hard past is steep climb for hours crossing the high passes. Before booking this trip, where all trekkers are aware of Himalayan rough terrain and high altitude. Taking slow and steady pace makes the walk much easier, the only tough challenge walking in deep snows. But hardly happens sometimes, where all safety precaution are undertaken by your guides.

Where Does the Everest High Pass Trekking Start? What Should I Expect?

Most treks and other adventure starts and ends at Lukla town as well for Everest High Pass Trekking. Flying from Kathmandu to a lively town at Lukla, with an amazing short airstrip.

The airport in Lukla is named Tenzing and Hillary, a tribute to legendary mountaineers who first conquered Mt. Everest in 1953. On this trek following the trail to several lovely Sherpa villages adorned with impressive religious monuments called Mani. Visiting important monasteries on route along with dramatic views of snow-capped peaks. Staying in a nice lodges from standard to simple accommodations that serves excellent foods as per the menu.

The Best Seasons for Everest High Pass Trekking:

The best seasons are spring and autumn / fall, the main high times for trekking around the Himalayas. As well for Everest High Pass Trekking, spring starts from March till May, where most days are fine and clear. Having longer days with enough sun-light hours, but can get overcast in the late afternoon. Expect snow-fall sometimes, especially around higher altitude and passes, but the right time for the trek. Cold morning and late afternoon till night time. 

The next best time is autumn / fall, days are mostly clear for excellent views and walks. But with short days due to sun-light hours, much colder morning, late afternoon and night time. Can get snowed around higher areas, as well on high passes. But most days are fine for the trek, expect extra cold from wind-chill factor.

Some adventurers and trekkers do trek during winter times of December and January to February. Most days are fine and clear with enough sun-shine, but shorter days and much cold with freezing temperatures. During morning and late afternoon till night time, can get snow-fall sometime with extra wind-chill factor to experience.

Climate and Weather on Everest High Pass Trekking:

As per seasonal wise most days are clear and fine for views and pleasant walks. However can expect snow on higher areas and passes sometimes, but with sunny days almost every day in good seasons. In spring minimum temperatures of minus 0° and maximum of 20° Celsius not adding extra wind-chill factor. During autumn the sun reach in the late morning and sunsets by 5 p.m. making it much colder. Minimum temperatures of minimum from minus 5° to 10°  Celsius with maximum of 15° to 20° Celsius. Around high altitude above 3,000 m the sun light are very bright with strong UV. Where all trekkers needs enough sun-blocks, wearing sun-hats to block the sun with UV.

Local Culture and Religion Everest High Pass Trekking:

The local culture and religion on Everest High Pass Trekking, makes it more interesting besides beautiful views of snow peaks. The native Sherpa of Khumbu interwoven to strong Buddhism religions of age-old heritage cultures. On this trek tour of famous and old monasteries on route like in Tengboche, Pangboche and at Thame. Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu 1, 350 m / 4, 430 feet and transfer to Hotel.

On the first arrival at Kathmandu, Nepal’s international airport received by the company staff and guide, for a short drive to your hotels in the heart of the city. Briefing by the guide regarding the treks and other necessary information, after getting refreshed from the jet lag. Evening a welcome group dinner in a nice typical Nepalese restaurant, an introduction to Nepali foods with folk cultural program.

Day 2 : Full day in Kathmandu option for tour and trek preparations.

Today after breakfast you will be ready for day guided sightseeing tours to Swayambhunath stupa known as monkey temple; combination between Hinduism and Buddhism from when you will be able to see good view of Kathmandu valley. Drive to Patan Durbar square (city of living arts), Pashupatinath, one of the famous Hindus temple which is located near by the holy river Bagmati and then drive to Buddhanath stupa one of the biggest and oldest stupa in the world. And stay over night in Kathmandu.

Briefing: Later in the afternoon, the whole group is briefed about the trekking. We will be checking all the equipment for the trek. If something it’s not appropriate enough we can provide, rent or help to buy it here.

Once all the equipment is checked and we are sure you go up there well dressed, we have the well come dinner with the whole group.

Day 3 : Fly to Lukla (2828m/9279ft) 35min flight and Trek to Phakdhingn (2780m/9121ft)about 04 hrs walk

An Early morning, as per your flight time you will be picked up one and half hour earlier from hotel for your transfer to domestic airport. After the necessary security formalities (keep your pen-knife-lighter-matches and other sharp cutting items including scissors and other knife in the bigger baggage not in hand bags) board in the smaller twin otter or similar plane for the sweeping panoramic flight of 35 minutes to Lukla 2800m. In Lukla you will have time to stroll around, while the guide sort and divide the load baggage to be carried by porters for your short trek of about 3-4 hrs to Phakding at 2652m. Lunch hour will depend upon the time of arrival at Lukla, either in Lukla or few hrs walks further down on route to Phakding. The walk is gradual and most of the way, with few ups from Tarhe khola, where you can have a superb view of Kusum-Kangru 6,369m crossing a short suspension bridge, from here after a short climb brings us to the Ghat village, another 01 hrs gradual walk brings you to Phakding village for the overnight stop near the bank of the Dudh-Kosi River.

Day 4 : Trek to Namche Bazaar (3440m/11287ft) about 05 hrs walk.

A long day walks to Namche Bazaar, morning walk follows after a hearty breakfast on a pleasant trail. The route leads to cross a long bridge over Dudh Koshi River to Monjo village and then enter Sagarmatha National Park. The park is listed as a world heritage site, enriched with flora and fauna, capturing the world's highest peaks. 

From the park entrance a slow walk over the bridge to Jorsalle, for a possible lunch stop, before a big climb to Namche Bazaar. After lunch on a pleasant path then uphill, from the last bridge walk follows on winding up to Namche for overnight halt. Checking into a nice lovely hotel or resort with rooms facing views of Kongde peaks, Namche is a famous and popular spot for a rest day as well to support acclimatization.

Day 5 : Rest day/Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar

Namche Bazaar, a large village almost a size of a town, where trekkers and local Sherpa can find various facilities from well stocked shops, stores with many good restaurants, bakeries as well banks. At Namche a day for acclimatization and short hike to view-point above Namche Bazaar for glorious views of Everest, Ama Dablam and range of peaks. Visit the nearby park museum with full information of the Khumbu region and cultures of Sherpa’s. For energetic people can hike up to Everest View Hotel for closer views of Everest and Ama Dablam.  Trek back to Namche for overnight. Stay overnight at Yeti Mountain Home.

Day 6 : Trek to Tengbche (3850m/12632ft) 04-05 hrs walk

From Namche an easy walk for first half till lunch, following a nice wide trail with few ups and down facing grand views of Everest, Ama Dablam with adjoining peaks, head down to a river Imjatse at Phungitenga, a small place and popular spot for lunch amidst forest surroundings. 

Having lunch, a long climb of few hours walking into dense forest of pines and rhododendron to Tengboche and the monastery. Located on a small plateau facing superb views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Kantega with Tharmasarku and Kongde peaks. 

After checking into a lodge, visit the monastery of great religious and cultural interest.

Day 7 : Trek to Dingboche (4350m/14272ft) 4-5 hrs walk

Morning walk after breakfast, a pleasant downhill through forested path to the bridge, on leaving the tall tree lines for some days. A slow climb to Pangboche village, the gateway to Ama Dablam base camp, with majestic views of Mt. Ama Dablam. After a refreshing stop uphill to Somare village for lunch and then heading towards beautiful Imjatse valley at Dingboche for overnight stop.

Day 8 : Rest/Acclimatization in Dingboche

Dingboche located beneath North Face of Ama Dablam with views of Island Peak and Lhotse with range of peaks. At Dingboche another free day for acclimatization and short hike to the scenic hill for more spectacular views of surrounding peaks, overlooking Mt. Makalu in the east direction. Afternoon after lunch enjoy pleasant stroll around Dingboche a temporary settlement with many good lodges for travelers.

Day 9 : Trek to Chhukung (4730m/15518ft) about 04 hrs walk.

Having an enjoyable rest with pleasant time in Dingboche a short day of few hours to Chukung. The last settlement east of Khumbu and Imjatse valley on route to Island Peak base camp, as well towards Kongma-La. 

On reaching Chukung check into a nice simple lodge, afternoon relax and preparation for the long walk next day. Crossing over the first Pass of Kongma-La to Lobuche. Interested people can climb to Chukung-Ri at above 5,546 m / 18, 195 feet high, offers fantastic panorama of surrounding high peaks.

Day 10 : Cross the Kongma La (5540m/18175ft) and trek to Lobuche (4910m/16109ft) about 07 hrs walk

Adventure gets closer to our destination, morning leads to a short climb up on a ridge. Enjoy the morning glorious views of Imjatse valley encircled by snow peaks, as the walk follows a pleasant uphill. Then enter a gully full of rocky screes in between Nuptse and Pokalde Peaks, as climb starts to Kongma-La Pass. 

The highest pass of the adventure, the top is well hidden by close peaks of Mehara or Kongma. As well from Pokalde peak and Nuptse wall, the top is marked with stone cairn and Buddhist flags. After short rest downhill to Khumbu glacier, walking with care and then up to moraine dunes, then down to Lobuche. 

Lobuche, a small settlement located on a corner, houses many good lodges for overnight halt facing grand views of Nuptse and Lobuche peaks.

Day 11 : Trek to Gorakshep(5180m/16995ft) 3-4 hrs walk and day hike Everest Base Camp (5364m/17600ft) 2-3 hrs walk

From Lobuche, altitude gains gradually as walk follows up to a glacial moraine and above Khumbu glaciers, walk up and down to Gorakshep a small settlement on the trail to Everest base camp, located beneath Kalapathar Hill and Mt. Pumori.

After having a short rest, walk further east for few hours on rocky path and glaciated section to Everest base camp, situated close to massive Khumbu Ice-Fall and glaciers. Enjoy the dramatic scenery of giant peaks of Nuptse, Lhotse with range of mountains that surrounds the base camp, the view of Mt. Everest is enclose by adjoining peaks of Nuptse and Lola, only the tip of Everest can be seen from the base camp.

Having an enjoyable moment head back to Gorakshep for overnight after achieving one of the highlight of the adventure.

Day 12 : Trek to KalaPathar (5545m/18193ft) 2-3 hrs walk and Dzonglha (4830m/15847ft)4-5 hrs walk

Early morning an options for steep long climb of few hours reaching on top Kalapathar rocky hill, as it means a black rock the highest point on treks.

From Kalapathar enjoy breathtaking panorama of Mt. Everest and adjoining giant peaks that surrounds the top of Kalapathar. After a glorious morning views head downhill to Gorakshep for breakfast and carry on trekking back to Lobuche.  Walk continues following on gradual trail to Dzongla, as walk diverts from the main trail leading to a hidden corners. Reaching at Dzongla located at the base of Cho-La our second pass to cross next early morning. At Dzongla check into a nice simple lodge facing grand close views of Cholatse and Taboche peaks.

Day 13 : Trek to Cho La (5420m/17782ft) about 04 hrs walk and to Thangnag (4700m//15420ft) about 03 hrs walk

The second high pass of the adventure to cross over high Cho-La, start early morning carrying packed lunch for the long day. Walk follows a steep up slope crossing over glacier to the east side, and then reach on top Cho-La.

In snow deep conditions, it will quite an arduous job to find the right track. From the top enjoy close views of Cholatse peaks with range of mountains then descend to Thagnak for overnight stop. A small isolated spot with few small lodges, located on the base of Cho-La Pass. As well close beneath Ngozumpa the longest glacier of Nepal and in whole Himalaya range.

Day 14 : Trek to Gokyo (4750m/15584ft) 4-5 hrs walk

Morning walk leads to Gokyo Lake following a scenic trail to Na a place with isolated small tea house. As walk leads to the first lake and past second lakes. Finally reaching at third main lakes of Gokyo also called Dudh Pokhari or Gokyo Lake. 

Where all good lodges situated above the lake shore, on a beautiful setting at 4,800 meters high. After lunch short walk around enjoy views of Mt. Cho Oyo world’s 06th highest with Mt. Gyachung Khang reflects on the surface of serene Gokyo Lake.

Day 15 : Trek to Gokyo Ri(5463m/17923ft) about 03 hrs walk

Morning a climb of few hours to reach our highest point of the adventure on top scenic Gokyo Ri at 5,357 m high offering tremendous panorama from 

Mt. Cho-Oyu, Mt. Everest, Lhotse and of Mt. Makalu covering four world highest mountains at one glance with series of smaller peaks.

Enjoying the views head down to Gokyo, rest of the free at leisure for short walk and just relax and marvel the beautiful scenery.

Day 16 : Trek to Renzo La (5345m/17536ft) and to Lungden (4380m/14370ft)about 07 hrs walk

Our final and tough day of the adventure to cross over the last Renjo-La Pass, to complete all three passes. An early morning walk to the end of Gokyo Lake, climb steadily for few hours to the top of Renjo-La. From the high ridge of Renjo-La offers superb panorama of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse and Taboche with Makalu and Cho-Oyu.

After an enjoyable scenic views, route leads downhill to a small frozen ponds, and then continue walk down to Lungden for overnight stop. A small temporary settlement with few simple lodges to cater then needs of trekkers. Which is also on-route to Nangpa-La pass that leads to the border of Nepal and Tibet.

Day 17 : Trek to Thame (3800m/12467ft) about 04 hrs walk

On completing all three high passes of Everest, morning walk leads on pleasant downhill to Marlung village. Walk continues reaching a sleepy and nice village of Thame located west of Namche Bazaar. At Thame with time to visit its old and interesting monastery believed to be of more than 500 years old history.

Day 18 : Trek to Monjo (2800m/9187ft) about 06 hrs walk

Feeling good after completing all major highlights of the adventure, walk on easy trail to Namche Bazaar. The morning starts with short downhill to a bridge, then climb reaching back into green vegetation and tree lines. Following a pleasant winding trail to nice village at Thamo, and then few hours walks to Namche Bazaar for lunch. Afternoon an easy downhill to Dudh Koshi River valley. From the river bed walk to Jorsalle and then short climb to Sagarmatha National Park entrance and exit point. Then finally ending the day reaching Monjo for overnight halt.

Day 19 : Trek to Lukla (2828m/9279ft) about 05 hrs walk

Our last walk of the adventure, leaving Monjo down to cross a bridge over Dudh Koshi River.

As walk follows on pleasant gradual trail to Phakding for short rest and continue trekking with last climb to Lukla for a final overnight stop around Khumbu and Everest area.

Day 20 : Fly back to Kathmandu (1350m/4430ft ) about 35 min flight

Morning as per the flight time for Kathmandu, a short walk to Tenzing & Hillary airport in Lukla. After checking in and then board a small aircraft for a sweeping scenic flight to Kathmandu. On arrival at Kathmandu domestic terminal transfer back to your hotel with time for individual activities and shopping souvenirs.

Day 21 : Free/Leisure day in Kathmandu

A day reserved for contingency in case of flight delay which can occur at Lukla or in the beginning due to bad weather conditions even in best time of the year, this day where one can enjoy joining in sightseeing tour for few hours or at leisure for individual activities.

Day 22 : Final Departure
