Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS)
Altitude Mountain Sickness could affect anyone. At high altitude, the decrease in atmospheric pressure makes breathing difficult due to less oxygen. Mainly, it happens above 3300m (10,000ft).
Signs and symptoms are as follows:
- Sleepy but can’t sleep
- Loss of appetite
- Stress/ Anger
Prevention for AMS is to dress warmly as per weather conditions, drink plenty of water, eat well and walk slow in a pace. It is good to ask and take rest or sleep if the body is not feeling well. Keep hydrated and make sure you follow the directions and suggestions provided by the trip leader about altitude mountain sickness.
Note - Always feel free to ask the trek leader or Guide to stop if you don't feel good. Sometimes we might feel it’s just a little bit of dizziness but, that little thing is the thing that leads water inside your brain or lungs before you even know it. Prevention is always better than cure.
Accommodation facilities in Mardi Himal base camp TrekkingAll of our hikes, trekking trails, tour programs are conducted on the basis of itineraries where accommodations are set in respective Hotels, Lodges, Home Stays, Guest Houses and Resorts. Camping in some remote areas are conducted as per the programed itinerary. Some trails could take longer or could be shorter depends upon the fitness and pace of the clients, availability of vehicle, delays or cancellation in flights, unfavorable or bad weather conditions, roads or trails.
Being an under develop country when we are going up in the hilly region as the elevation increases the vegetation and the density of local people decrease which is the major reason why sometimes we need to compromise for the best services. But being a tourist route still most of the facilities are available while some things may require compromise. For example- 24hour electricity, laundry services (because of lack of warm temperature and sunlight), internet, fruits, hot showers, toilet commode, quality of room and availability (standard quality rooms are found which are designed for meeting the basic requirements). But the trekking planner
team do their best to provide best available services and facilities.
Acclimatization and Communication on Mardi Himal TrekAdapting to nature, temperature, climate, traditions, cultures and food is one of the primary thing that helps to complete and enjoy the trek. As we make itineraries we always keep in mind to not elevate more in a certain day, it doesn’t mean that we are not able to elevate more than 1000 meter in a day but doing so, may cause altitude mountain sickness, problem in breathing. But, if we make the walk slow and include stops in the trail it means we are helping our body to adapt according to the temperature, weather and climate.
We are not going on a trek to walk 24/7 and hiring a guide doesn’t mean he or she is leading and you are just following but, asking questions about the local people, their way of living, traditions and culture is a way to know more about the traditions, cultures about the place we are traveling towards.
Sometimes foods and beverages cannot be compromised as it leads to physical and mental stress causing diarrhea, constipation, headaches, anger issues, feeling of mistreatment and lack of services. So before going on a trek and while asking for the available accommodation the visitors must always say about the foods and beverages they are allergic to or that they don’t consume which would help to make a plan B regarding food and beverages.
Water and Toilet facilities on Mardi Himal base camp TrekkingWhen we trail towards the high lands the quality of services must be compromised because of the locally available limited natural and artificial facilities. Hot showers are not available in some places due to lack of gases and woods in the higher areas due to which clients must pay extra for the bio-mass required to produce heat for making hot water or showering and drinking. Mineral waters are not available due to lack of transportation so, it’s better to carry a bottle that filters the water as it goes in or carrying water cleaning capsules can also be an ideal choice.
Being a rural area & due to lack of water some places lodges, tea shops and hotels have a squat toilet where you are required to squat in order to do the waste management of the body. That’s not only the reason but modern western toilets require at least 2-3 liters of water for flushing which is impossible to full-fill due to the lack of availability.
Electricity, Internet and Battery Recharge:-Mardi Himal base camp Trekking
Being an under develop country and due to lack of infrastructures the facilities related to electricity are not available on some regions and even if they are available load -shedding, shortage of electricity could occur due to natural or artificial reasons. Carrying a power bank is recommended in order to charge the battery of cell phones, cameras and torches or other devices.
Recharging the battery requires extra fees in some places due to the fact that they are buying or using electricity from external sources. For example generators, solar and even private hydro-powers.
The case of internet is the same due to electricity as well as the private poles and amount of money the locals have to invest heavily on poles, wires and internet service providers due to which the internet requires a certain amount of payment but varies from place to place and is not applicable everywhere.
